Atlanta Air Conditioning: AC Components and How They Work
April 1, 2013

While it is important that only a qualified air conditioning and heating professional is allowed to service your air conditioning system, it is always beneficial to better understand the systems you use to keep your home comfortable. The Atlanta air conditioning specialists at Comfort Zone Heating & Air have some information to share with you about the basic components of your air conditioning system and the tasks that they perform. You depend on your air conditioning system to keep you comfortable during the hottest days of the year. Get to know this system a little better with this helpful information.

The compressor of your air conditioning system pumps the refrigerant throughout the system. Gaseous, low temperature refrigerant is compressed within the compressor. This raises both the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant, which then travels to the condenser.

While the hot refrigerant is pumped through the condenser coil, a fan blows outside air over it. This causes the air to absorb the heat from the refrigerant, and it becomes liquid again. At this point, the high pressure liquid is sent to the expansion valve.

The expansion valve senses the temperature of the evaporator, and it allows the liquid to pass through a small opening, expanding to a cool gas. Now it flows over the evaporator coil. Air is blown over this coil, which removes heat from the air. The cooled air can then be distributed throughout your home through your ductwork system.

The ductwork in your home is just as vital to the successful operation of your air conditioner as these other components. If your ductwork is improperly installed or damaged it will allow the air you have paid to cool to escape before reaching its destination. Your air conditioner will then need to work harder, causing it to perform less efficiently.
