Factors to Consider When Installing a New Air Conditioner

air-conditioning-tool-bagWe’ve still got a little while before the weather starts to consistently cool off. That means that you’re probably still going to need an air conditioner to keep your home cool during that time. If your air conditioner has failed, or you have some other reason to install a new air conditioning system, you should be sure to consider a number of factors first. You don’t want to install a brand new system, only to find out that it isn’t suited for your home situation. Have a look at some of these factors, and why they’re important.

Tonnage

The tonnage rating on an air conditioner doesn’t have to do with how much it weighs, but how much air the system can move while it’s operating. The biggest, most expensive air conditioner may not necessarily be the most effective at cooling your home. If you install an air conditioner with too much output capacity, or too little, you will be setting the system up for problems in the future.

An air conditioner with too much output capacity will be shut down by the thermostat before it can complete a full cooling cycle. This will put more strain on the system than it was designed to handle, increasing the rate at which the system wears down. The added wear and tear will cause the system to break down more often, and will eventually shorten its lifespan by a number of years. Installing an air conditioner that is too large will only ensure that you have to replace the system earlier than you would otherwise have to.

Installing an air conditioner that is too small will cause different issues, but with similar ultimate consequences. An undersized air conditioner will have to function for longer than it is supposed to in order to accomplish the desired cooling. Just as with short cycling, this will cause the system to wear down more quickly and require replacement earlier. If you’re not sure what the ideal tonnage rating for your air conditioner is, consult with a professional to help you decide.

Types

What type of air conditioner would fit your needs best? Do you go with a central air conditioner, or would it be better to install a ductless system? That depends on your home, and what you want out of your system. If your home doesn’t have ducts, it’s probably not cost effective to install a centralized system. On the other hand, it might be worth using a ductless system even if you do already have ducts installed. Do you want a dedicated air conditioner, or would a heat pump that can provide climate control all year-round help? If you’re not sure, it’s a good idea to call a technician to evaluate your home for you.
