Cooler Nights = Turn Off Your AC - Comfort Zone Heating & Cooling
September 28, 2015

At this time of year, most people in Johns Creek, GA get a welcome break from the heat and humidity that comprises our summer heat. We are still quite warm during the day, but once the sun sets, the air becomes cool and crisp. It’s warm enough during the day to need air conditioning, but not so much at night. If you have left your air conditioning system on during these cooler nights, you may have noticed some problems with your AC, and there’s a good reason for this.

When Is the Air Temperature Too Low?

Air conditioners are made to work optimally in a specific temperature range. This range is pretty wide, particularly on the high side, but there is a bottom and a top to the range. On the cool side, 60 degrees is typically the cut off temperature point at which your AC will no longer be able to operate correctly, and there are a couple of reasons for this.

First, the refrigerant in your system is very sensitive to temperature; it is at different temperature points that the refrigerant changes states. In a cooling system, it is necessary for the refrigerant to be in a specific state (liquid or gas) at different points in the system for system to run correctly; when the temperature outside is too cool, the refrigerant won’t react as needed. Second, the refrigerant absorbs the heat in the air in order to cool; at 60 degrees, there isn’t a lot of heat or humidity in the air, and this will also affect the heat release/cooling process. The result may be warm air blowing into your warm, ice on the evaporator coils or the shutdown of your system.

The best way to avoid these kinds of issues at this time of year is to program your AC to turn off at night and power back up in the morning. If you need help with this, give the experts at Comfort Zone HVAC a call.
