How to Stop Atlanta Air Conditioning Malfunctions
June 13, 2016

The serious summer heat is about to start, and July and August will bring in the sweltering heat. You can expect to have your home’s air conditioning system working regularly during the day—and maybe even during the night—for the next few months. That means plenty o’ stress on the AC, which could lead to it faltering and requiring repairs.

Although finding speedy repairs is easy—you just have to call us, any time of the day or night—they’re definitely something you want to avoid if at all possible. We have some tips to make it easier for your air conditioner to survive to the fall without needing a visit from an HVAC “doctor.”

First, make sure you have professional maintenance

We cannot stress this enough! The #1 way to help your AC breeze through the heat of summer is to call professionals to inspect it and tune it up before summer arrives. Maintenance can prevent 85% of repairs that a system may need over its lifetime. Call us today to schedule this service before the heat waves set it!

Keep the area around the condenser clear

The condenser, which is the outside unit of the air conditioning system, needs to have about one to two feet clear on all sides. Make sure that there aren’t plants growing close to it, piles of leaves, or other debris, as these can lead to internal damage to the system—not to mention inefficient performance.

Change the air filter regularly

The air filter must be changed every 1 to 6 months, depending on what type it is. (We wrote about this last week, and it’s a good idea to review it so you know how often to swap out or clean the filter.)

Lower AC stress with wise thermostat settings

Don’t crank the thermostat down to the lowest setting, since this won’t make you more comfortable and it will keep the air conditioner running too long—leading to wear and tear and malfunctions. Keep a steady temperature during the day in the mid-70s, and raise it by 8–10°F at night.
