Spring Maintenance Is Necessary for Your AC | Comfort Zone
March 14, 2016

The official start of spring is almost here, and temperatures are warming up. You’re probably looking forward to the change in the weather—but you also need to make sure your home’s cooling system is prepared as well. Simply turning the air conditioner on and then trusting that it’ll do the work you need from it all the way until fall is risky. The air conditioner must have an inspection and tune-up during the early spring to see that it can handle the immense stress of working long hours for months on end.

What does maintenance do to help an air conditioner?

This is a good question, since many people aren’t exactly certain what AC maintenance entails, and therefore don’t understand why it’s so necessary for efficient, effective, and reliable cooling performance during the summer. Here are some of the tasks that maintenance technicians do that help an air conditioner:

  • Check refrigerant level: One of the more common troubles that ACs run into are leaks along the copper refrigerant lines—an unfortunate side-effect of the higher levels of formaldehyde in indoor air. It’s hard to tell that refrigerant is being lost at first, so this check is important to stopping the problem early, sealing the leaks, and recharging the refrigerant. Otherwise, you might be looking at completely broken compressor by mid-summer… and that’ usually the end of an AC system!
  • Clean the condensate pan and drain: Moisture from the evaporator coils drips down into a pan and out a drain. Clogs may develop in the drain, and if the pan overflows it will cause the AC to shut down (and it will also cause water damage).
  • Lubricate motors: Stress on the motors that run the compressor, the blower, and the outdoor fan can eventually cause burn-out. If the motors are low on lubricant, the technician will take care of this.
  • Tighten electrical connections: Technicians will look over all electrical connections and tighten them so the air conditioner has little chance of suffering from major electrical trouble during the summer.
  • Change the air filter: This is a task you’ll need to do yourself during the summer to keep proper airflow in the unit. The technician can show you how to do it if you don’t know already.
