Problems That Lead to Atlanta Air Conditioner Replacement
October 2, 2017

air-conditioning-tool-bagAir conditioners can be afflicted by all kinds of issues over years of use. Some of these issues are minor, like a clogged air filter, and can be remedied without even necessarily involving professional technicians. Others, like short cycling, are very serious threats to the system that require immediate professional assistance. It’s important that you be able to tell the difference between these two classes of air conditioner issues, and that you know when to call for repairs. Let’s go over a few of the more serious problems that can lead to replacing your entire air conditioner if you’re not careful.

Refrigerant Leaks

Refrigerant is what your air conditioner uses to keep your home cool. It’s a broad term for a variety of different fluids that are designed to absorb and release heat. The air conditioner doesn’t consume refrigerant during operation. It simply absorbs heat inside the home and releases it outside by recycling its refrigerant supply. If a leak develops in the refrigerant line, it can cause some very serious issues for the system in short order.

As the level of refrigerant available to the air conditioner drops, the system’s ability to cool the home will drop, as well. Eventually, the refrigerant level will drop to a point where the system can no longer continue operating at all. You might be able to revive an air conditioner that has broken down because of this, but that depends entirely on how much damage it’s already suffered due to the low refrigerant. If you notice fluid dripping from your air conditioner, especially if it’s accompanied by dropping output, it’s a good idea to call for repairs as soon as possible.

Short Cycling

Short cycling is when the air conditioner shuts itself down within a couple minutes of activating, before it can complete a full heating cycle. There are a number of different possible causes for this kind of problem, including electrical issues or a malfunctioning compressor throwing off the operating rhythm of the system. Regardless of what causes these issues, though, what you should be more concerned about are the consequences.

Short cycling has a number of short and long term effects. First, a short cycling air conditioner will have its cooling output significantly hampered. This is because the system can’t complete a full cooling cycle, and so is not operating long enough to affect meaningful temperature change. Second, short cycling seriously increases the rate at which the air conditioner’s various parts wear down. The added stress of turning on and shutting off constantly quickly starts to take a toll on the system. Imagine if you turned on your car, ran it for a minute, and turned it off again, over and over for about 100 repetitions. That’s kind of what is happening to your air conditioner when it’s short cycling. Air conditioners that have been left to short cycle for a long time tend to need repairs much more often, and have shorter lifespans as a result. Make sure that you call for repairs if you notice that your air conditioner is short cycling.
