Start Planning to Save on Atlanta Air Conditioning Bills
February 6, 2017

piggy-bank-ac-savingsA large amount of the energy your home uses each year goes to running the air conditioner. This probably won’t come as a shock to you if you’ve already lived in Georgia for at least a year. Our winters are short, and the summer seasons can become brutally hot and humid. Seeing high electricity bills during the middle of the year isn’t a surprise.

But do those bills need to be so high? Chances are they’re higher than they need to be. We have some advice on how you can get started with saving money on those air conditioning bills as our weather becomes warmer.

First, make sure you have air conditioning maintenance

This is the essential part of not only saving money with your AC, but preventing repair issues and breakdowns. You only have to sign up for our maintenance program, and we’ll see that you have the professional tune-up and inspection necessary for your air conditioning system to have a smooth trip through the coming summer.

Prepare with a dehumidifier

Humidity is a major comfort problem in Georgia. The moisture in the air doesn’t actually raise the temperature; what it does is make it more difficult for your body to release heat through perspiration. If there’s more heat trapped in your body, you will feel hotter than normal. An 80°F day will feel like 90°F when the humidity is high—and that will also mean you’ll have to run the air conditioner much longer. Putting in a whole-house dehumidifier is an excellent tool for comfort and getting control of cooling bills.

Upgrade your thermostat

The thermostat seems like a small thing, but it can have a significant impact on your air conditioning. Putting in a thermostat with better features, like multi-day programming, will help you reduce the amount of waste from your AC. Even better, upgrade to a “smart” thermostat, which will do the hard work for you and find the ideal settings to maximize savings. Wi-Fi thermostats (and most smart thermostats are Wi-Fi enabled) will allow you control over your home’s climate system from almost any place.

Shaded windows

Windows allow in extra heat, even when they’re closed. East and West-facing windows receive the most sunlight exposure, so have shades installed on them if you haven’t already and keep them shut when the sun is shining. Installing awnings over the windows is also a major help.

Replace that old air conditioner!

This is the most extreme step… but sometimes it’s the best step. If you have an AC that’s more than 15 years old, it’s extremely likely that it’s wasting money each time it comes on. Replacing it means you’ll start saving money right away, and the new system should pay for itself after only a few years. You can put in a new air conditioner that is more efficient than your old one ever was! Let our specialists help you find the ideal new air conditioner.
