Are You Paying More Than You Need to for Heating? - Comfort Zone Heating & Cooling
A bag of money, representing savings on your heating bill.

The cost of heating your Atlanta home may not be as high as cooling it, but that doesn’t mean you should spend more than necessary to keep warm during winter. There are several approaches all homeowners can take to lower the heating bill, many of which have additional benefits.

  • Change your furnace filter regularly. A dirty filter makes your heating system work harder, which means it uses more energy. Check the filter at least once a month, and change it whenever debris has accumulated, regardless of the filter’s rated lifespan. Using a clean filter has the added benefit of improving indoor air quality.
  • Refresh insulation and weather stripping. How much heat is lost through a small gap around an entry door? Quite a lot, and the same is true for poorly insulated attics and walls. Making sure your insulation and weather stripping are adequate lowers not just your heating bill, but your summer cooling bill too.
  • Consider a zoned system when it’s time to replace your HVAC system. With working from home now the new normal for so many people, a zoned HVAC system may make more sense than ever. Zoning lets you control the temperature in different areas of the home, so you are not wasting heated (or cooled) air in unoccupied spaces.
  • Install a programmable thermostat. A programmable thermostat avoids wasting heat by letting you set a lower temperature when the house is empty and a higher temperature shortly before you return home. This energy-saving benefit also applies to cooling during the summer.
  • Don’t skip your annual heating system tune-up. Most home appliances don’t need a visit from a service tech unless something malfunctions. Not so for your heating system. Whether you have a furnace or a heat pump, it should be inspected and tuned up by a certified HVAC tech each year. Just like with your car, regular preventive maintenance improves energy efficiency, prevents breakdowns, and extends the life of the heating system.

It’s never too late to get your heating tune-up.

The best time to have preventive maintenance done is before the start of the heating season. But if you haven’t done that, it still makes sense to get a heating tune-up. That way, you’ll be assured your heating system is operating efficiently and safely for the rest of the heating season.
