How Often Do You Need to Change Your HVAC Air Filter?
February 29, 2016

We often emphasize the importance of regular professional maintenance for your heating and air conditioning system. That’s why we offer membership in our Comfort Club to encourage customers to have annual professional inspections and tune-ups for both their ACs and heaters.

There is an important maintenance job you need to take care of yourself between these two professional inspections: change the air filter. The filter on the cabinet of an HVAC system (furnace, AC, or heat pump) is responsible for preventing dust and other debris from reaching the important internal components of the air conditioner or heater. But the debris trapped in the filter will eventually lead to clogging, restricting air flow and seriously impairing the HVAC system’s energy efficiency. A clogged filter can even lead to repair issues.

You should change the filter once a month

No matter if you’re regularly using your air conditioner or your heating system, its filter must be changed monthly. (In the case of a system that uses a permanent filter, take out the filter once a month and gently clean it with a garden hose, let it dry, then replace it.)

To help you remember to do this important monthly task, connect the filter change with another job you have to do each month, such as paying an important bill. Each time you put in the new filter, write with a marker on the side the date that you replaced it. This makes it easy check to see if it’s due for a replacement yet.

What if you look at the filter when it comes time to change it and it doesn’t look like it has much clogging? You still need to swap it for a fresh filter. There are many contaminants that can become trapped inside the mesh of the filter, such as allergens, that will have a negative effect on your home’s air quality unless they are cleaned out.
