How Long Will Your Atlanta Heater Last? | Comfort Zone
December 21, 2015

There are certain questions our Comfort Zone Heating & Cooling technicians hear with regularity, and one of them is “how long will my heating system last?” This can be a dicey question, as part of the answer lay with the type of system you have, and the other part of the answer lay with how well your maintain your system. Each type of heating system has an average lifespan, which we’ll give an overview of below, but making your system last is highly dependent on you.

Average Lifespans

Here are the average lifespans for the different types of heating systems we carry here at Comfort Zone Heating & Cooling:

  • Gas furnaces – gas furnaces (or propane furnaces) have an average lifespan of 15-20 years. Furnaces have more moving parts than most other heating systems, making them more prone to repair than others types of heating systems. As such, making sure your gas furnace functions for a good, long time depends heavily on excellent maintenance and taking care of repair issues as soon as they arise.
  • Electric furnaces – electric furnaces have a somewhat longer lifespan, averaging 20-30 years. This is partly due to the fact that they are clean systems, and they have less moving parts than a gas furnace. However, it is critical to have a trained expert perform annual maintenance and take care of all repairs as soon as possible.
  • Heat pumps – one of the benefits of a heat pump HVAC system is their longevity; they last about 25 years. But, heat pumps are 2-in-1 devices, delivering both your heat and your air conditioning. This means that it is an absolutely necessity to keep your heat pump well maintained, and not just once a year, but twice a year.

We hope we’ve been able to shed some light on the age-old question of how long your heating system in Alpharetta, GA will last.
