The Heater Isn’t Working: What Can You Do before Calling?
January 18, 2016

A broken heater during a cold winter day is one of the major emergencies a homeowner might encounter during the season. If your heater suddenly stops providing your household with warmth on a chilly day, you’ll probably feel pulled toward two different instincts. One is to immediately call for professional heating repair. The other is to try to tinker with the heater and maybe see if you can get it working again on your own.

The first instinct is definitely the better one. Only trained and licensed HVAC technicians should attempt to fix a malfunctioning heater… especially a gas-powered furnace. However, you can take a few steps to check on the heater before making a call. We’ve outlined them below:

  • See if the house has electrical power: During the day, it might not be easy to notice that your home has lost power. Check to see that a power outage isn’t behind the problem. Also look to see if a circuit breaker has been tripped. Remember, even a gas-powered heater requires electricity for operation.
  • Check on the thermostat: A mistaken setting on a thermostat, such as incorrect programming, can often be the simple reason behind why a heating system isn’t coming on. If you discover the thermostat is malfunctioning, then you have a good idea what’s wrong and can share this information with your heating repair technician.
  • Make sure the vents aren’t blocked: Lack of heat can sometimes occur because of accidental blocking of vents from moved furniture.
  • Check on the gas meter to the house: Loss of gas service is a frequent reason for people losing heating power.
  • Examine the air filter: For forced-air heating systems (furnaces, heat pumps) a clogged filter can result in system malfunction.

Once you’ve discovered that you have an actual repair issue on your hands, pick up the phone and call your local licensed heating and cooling specialists.
